Why
the Book of Ecclesiastes is important:
This book emphatically drives home the point that life on this
earth is terminal and that the pursuit of worldly wealth and
pleasure is all pointless vanity.
King Solomon was the wisest and wealthiest king who ever lived and
as he describes his life experiences and discusses the meaning of life
and the best way to live, he concludes that all the actions of mankind,
apart from obedience to God and serving God, are ultimately vain,
futile, foolish, and end in death.
Wisdom provides a means to a well-lived life on earth ... to enjoy
the simple pleasures of life and purposeful work, both of which are
gifts from God.
To seek after selfish gain is foolish, meaningless, materialistic
emptiness, and leads to misery. Discover truth by seeking to know God.
Chapters 1-2 Solomon discusses the experiences of his life and confesses
that everything that he did amounted to a selfish search for pleasure, the
result of which was all vanity, striving after the wind, and meant nothing
in the eternal perspective.
Chapters 3-5 Solomon explains that we come into the world naked and then
we all die and take nothing out of this world. In the end, all chasing
was ultimately futile and useless. Everything ends in death.
Chapters 6-8 Solomon gives advice about what makes for a meaningful life.
The only good things in life are to enjoy what God provides and pursue
work that honors God.
Chapters 9-11 Solomon concludes that since everyone will eventually die,
all the deeds of man are useless vanity, without God.
Chapter 12 Epilogue: To fear God and keep His commandments is the whole
duty of everyone, for God will bring every deed to judgment. Therefore,
it is essential to have a right attitude toward God. Enjoy what you have,
but do not be greedy.
