The Book of Job

A story depicting the malicious assault of Satan upon a righteous man, Job's patient endurance, the folly of human philosophy and rationalization, divine wisdom, and the ultimate deliverance of the one who was afflicted.

Chapter 1
1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. This man was perfect~ and upright, one who feared God and shunned+ evil.
20 When calamity fell upon him, Job arose, tore his robe,+ shaved his head, and then fell down upon the ground and worshiped God,
21 saying: Naked I came out of my mother's womb and naked I shall return. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
22 In all this, Job did not sin or charge God foolishly.

Chapter 2
9 Then his wife said to him: Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die.
10 But he said to her: You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive adversity+? In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

Chapter 13
15 Rather, he said: Though he slay me, yet will I trust in Him. But I will maintain my own ways before Him.
16 He also will be my salvation. For an hypocrite shall not come before Him.

Chapter 16
20 Later, Job said: My friends scorn me, but my eye pours out tears to God.

Chapter 19
19 All my closest+ friends hate+ me and those whom I loved have turned against me.
25 But I know that my redeemer lives and that He will stand upon the earth in the latter day.

Chapter 33
26 He shall pray to God and He will be favorable to him. And He shall see his face with joy, for He will render to man His righteousness.
27 He looks on men and if any say, I have sinned and perverted that which was right, and it did not benefit+ me,
28 He will deliver his soul from going into the pit and his life shall see the light.
29 All these things God often works with mankind.

Chapter 38
1 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:
3 Now gird up your loins like a man. For I will demand of you and you answer me.
4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
5 Who has laid the measures of it, if you know? Who has stretched the line upon it?
6 Where are the foundations of it fastened? Who laid the corner stone of it?

Chapter 42
1 Then Job answered the Lord and said:
2 I know that you can do everything and that no thought can be withheld from you.
5 I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you.
6 Therefore, I hate+ myself and repent in dust and ashes.
12 So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning ...
