Why
the Book of Obadiah is important:
The book of Obadiah is important to show that God will judge all
those who are against His chosen people.
Obadiah was an Israelite prophet in the house of King Ahab of
Israel. God instructed Obadiah to prophesy that the kingdom of
Edom would be destroyed because of its sins against God and
against Israel.
God's judgment on the nation of Edom led to its fateful end.
As descendants of Jacob's twin brother Esau, the nation of Edom
had been in conflict with Israel throughout ancient times.
In verses 1-9, Obadiah describes the wickedness of the Edomites,
heir pride, and God's judgment on them. God proclaimed, The pride
of your heart has deceived you. Because of your pride, I will
bring you down.
In verses 10-14, Obadiah describes Edom's transgressions and
offenses and he explains that Edom should have acted like a
brother to Israel instead of acting with violence toward Israel.
Edom's arrogance ultimately resulted in it's complete demise
and being cut off forever.
In verses 15-21, Obadiah proclaims Israel's victory and the
demise of Edom as the house of Esau which ultimately became extinct.
Obadiah concludes with the promise of the fulfillment and
deliverance of Zion in the last days when the land would be
restored to God's people.
Through Obadiah, God declared, Do not look down on your brother
in the day of his misfortune. Do not rejoice over your brother's
destruction. Do not boast in the day of your brother's trouble.
Instead, understand that the day of the Lord is near for all
nations. Through Obadiah, God set forth this key principle:
As you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will
return upon your own head.
