Acts Chapter 1 1 The first+ record+ that I made, Theophilus, was about all that Jesus began to do and teach2 until the day in which He was taken up. After that, through the Holy Spirit He gave instructions+ to the apostles whom He had chosen.3 After He had suffered+ death, He also showed Himself to them alive by many infallible proofs. For forty days, He was seen by them and spoke to them about the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.4 And, being assembled together with them, He commanded them to not depart from Jerusalem, but: Wait for the promise of the Father that you have heard me proclaim.5 For John indeed+ baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit, not many days from now.6 Therefore, when they came together, they asked of Him saying: Lord, will you at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?7 He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or the seasons the Father has put under+ His own authority+.8 But after the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you shall receive power and you shall be witnesses to me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and to the ends+ of the Earth.9 When He had spoken these things, while they observed+, He was taken up and a cloud received Him out of their sight.10 While they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel.11 They said: Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven, will come back in like manner as you have seen Him go into heaven.12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called Olivet, which is a Sabbath day's journey from Jerusalem.13 When they entered+ the city, they went into an upper room where they were staying+: Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon Zelotes, and Jude the brother of James.14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication~, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.15 In those days, Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples and spoke+. The number of names together was about a hundred and twenty.16 Peter said: Men and family+: This Scripture needed to be fulfilled. The Holy Spirit spoke through the mouth of David before concerning Judas Iscariot who was the guide to those who took Jesus. Psalm 109:717 For he was numbered with us and had obtained part of this ministry.18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity, and falling headlong, he burst apart+ in the midst and all his insides+ gushed out.19 This fact became+ known to all who live in Jerusalem, so that field is now called in their own language+: Aceldama. That is: The Field of Blood.20 For it is written in the book of Psalms: Let his habitation be desolate and let no one dwell therein. Let another take his office+. Psalm 109:821 Therefore, from among these men who have joined+ with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day in which He was taken up from us, one must be selected to be a witness with us of Jesus' resurrection.23 So they put forth+ two names: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.24 Then they prayed and said: You Lord, know the hearts of all people. Show which+ of these two you have chosen25 so that he may take part of this ministry and apostleship from which Judas Iscariot fell by transgression so that he might go to his own place.26 And they gave forth their lots and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the other eleven apostles.
