John Chapter 5

After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is a pool with five porches near the sheepgate+ in Jerusalem. In Hebrew, this place is called Bethesda.
Within these porches a large+ number+ of disabled+ people+ lay: blind, crippled+, and withered, waiting for the water to move.
From time to time+, an angel went down into the pool and stirred+ the water. After this stirring+, whoever stepped into the water first was healed+ of whatever disease they had.
Now a certain man there, had an infirmity for thirty eight years.
When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, He said to him: Do you want+ to be made whole?
The disabled+ man answered Him: Sir, when the water is stirred+, I have no one to put me into the pool. While I am coming, another steps down before me.
Jesus said to him: Rise, take up your bed and walk.
Immediately the man was made whole and took up his bed and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.
Then the Jews said to the one who was cured: It is the Sabbath day. It is not lawful for you to carry your bed.
He answered them: The one who made me well+ said to me: Take up your bed and walk.
Then they asked him: Who is the man who said to you: Take up your bed and walk?
The man who had been healed did not know+ who it was, for Jesus had quietly moved+ away, a multitude being in that place.
Afterward Jesus found the man in the temple and said to him: Behold, you are made whole. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come to you.
Then the man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole.
Therefore, the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to slay Him because He had done these things on the Sabbath day.
But Jesus answered them: My Father is working until now+ and I am working.
Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, not only because He had broken the Sabbath, but also because He said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.
Then Jesus answered and said to them: Truly+, truly, I say to you: The Son can do nothing by Himself, but only what He sees the Father do. For what things + He does, these also the Son does in like manner+.
For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself does, and He will show Him greater works than these, so that you may marvel.
For as the Father raises up the dead and gives life+ to them, even so the Son will give life+ to whomever He chooses+.
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
so that all people should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who has sent Him.
Truly+, truly, I say to you: Those who hear my Word and believe in Him who sent me have eternal+ life and will not come into condemnation, but are passed from death to life.
Truly+, truly, I say to you: The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
For as the Father has life in Himself, so He also gave to the Son to have life in Himself.
He has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man.
Do not marvel at this. For the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice
and will come forth. Those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of damnation.
By my own self alone, I can do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just because I do not seek my own will but the will of the Father who has sent me.
If I alone bear witness of myself, my witness is not confirmed as true.
There is another who bears witness of me, and we know that the testimony of this witness for me is true.
You sent to John and he testified+ to the truth.
But I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things so that you might be saved.
John was a burning and shining light, and you were willing to rejoice in his light for a season.
But I have the greater testimony+ than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish, the same works that I do bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me.
The Father Himself who sent me has borne witness of me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His shape.
You do not have His Word abiding in you. For you do not believe the one whom He has sent.
Search the Scriptures. For in them you think you have eternal life, and they + testify of me. Jeremiah 29:13
But you will not come to me so that you might have life.
I do not receive honor from people+.
But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.
I have come in my Father's name and you do not receive me. If another shall come in his own name, you will receive him.
How can you believe, you who receive honor from+ one another but+ do not seek the honor that comes from God alone+?
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses in whom you trust.
If you had believed Moses, then you would have believed me, because+ he wrote about+ me.
But if you do not believe his writings, then how will you believe my words?
