John Chapter 6 1 After these things, Jesus went over the sea of Galilee by Tiberias.2 A great multitude followed Him because they saw the miracles~ that He worked+ for the afflicted+.3 Jesus went up on a mountain and sat down there with His disciples.4 Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.5 When Jesus lifted up His eyes and saw a great multitude+ coming to Him, He said to Philip: Where shall we buy bread so that these may eat?6 Jesus said this to test+ Philip, for He already knew what He was going+ to do.7 Philip answered Him: A half year wages worth+ of bread is not sufficient for them if everyone of them receives+ a little.8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him:9 There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?10 Jesus said: Have+ the people+ sit down. For there was much grass in that place. So the people+ sat down, about five thousand men and their families.11 Then Jesus took the loaves and when He had given thanks He distributed to the disciples and the disciples gave to those who were sitting+ there. In like manner+ they distributed portions of the fish, as much as they wanted+.12 When they were filled, He said to His disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain so that nothing is lost.13 Therefore they gathered together and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves that remained over and above from those who had eaten.14 When the people+ had seen the miracle~ that Jesus did, they said: This truly is the Prophet who is to come into the world. Psalm 110:415 Therefore, when Jesus perceived that they would come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed to the mountain again to be alone.16 When the evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,17 entered a boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. It was now dark and Jesus had not come to them.18 Then the sea rose up+ because of a great wind that blew.19 When they had rowed about three and a half miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid.20 But He said to them: I Am+ with you. Do not be afraid.21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat arrived at the land where they were going+.22 The next day, the people who stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except+ the one in which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus did not leave+ with His disciples in the boat, but that His disciples had left+ alone.23 However, other boats had come from Tiberias near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks.24 Therefore, when the people saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him: Rabbi, when did you come here?26 Jesus answered them and said: Truly+, truly, I say to you: You seek me, not because you saw the miracles~, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.27 Do not labor for food+ that perishes, but for that food+ that endures to eternal+ life, which the Son of man will give to you, for God the Father has set His seal on Him. Proverbs 9:528 Then they said to Him: What shall we do so that we might work the works of God?29 Jesus answered and said to them: This is the work of God: That you believe in the one whom He has sent.30 Therefore, they said to Him: What sign will you show us then so that we may see and believe you? What work will you perform?31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert. As it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Exodus 16:432 Then Jesus said to them: Truly+, truly, I say to you: Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.33 For the bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.34 Then they said to Him: Lord, give us this bread always+ forevermore.35 Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. Those who come to me will never hunger. Those who believe in me will never thirst.36 But as I said to you, you have seen me and yet you do not believe.37 All whom+ the Father gives to me will come to me, and those who come to me I will in no way+ cast out.38 For I came down from heaven not to do my own will, but to do the will of the one who sent me.39 This is the will of the Father who sent me: That of all He has given me I should not lose any+ but should raise them+ up again at the last day.40 This is the will of Him who sent me: That everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal+ life. I will raise them+ up at the last day.41 Then the Jews complained+ about+ Him because He said: I am the bread come down from heaven.42 They said: Is this not Jesus the son of Joseph whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says: I came down from heaven?43 Therefore Jesus answered and said to them: Do not complain+ among yourselves.44 No one can come to me unless+ the Father who has sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.45 It is written in the prophets: And they shall all be taught by God. Therefore everyone who has heard and has learned of the Father comes to me. Isaiah 2:3 Isaiah 54:13 Jeremiah 31:33 Micah 4:246 Not that anyone has seen the Father except+ the One who is from God. He has seen the Father.47 Truly+ truly I say to you: Those who believe in me have eternal+ life.48 I am the bread of life.49 Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness and are dead.50 This is the bread come down from heaven. Anyone+ may eat of this bread and not die.51 I am the living bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, they will live forever. The bread I will give is my flesh, and I will give myself for the life of the world.52 Therefore, the Jews argued+ among themselves saying: How can this man give us His flesh to eat?53 Then Jesus said to them: Truly+, truly, I say to you: Unless+ you eat the flesh~ of the Son of man which is the bread of life, the Word of God, and drink His blood~ which is to be filled with the Holy Spirit, you have no life in you.54 Whoever eats my flesh~ and drinks my blood~ has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.55 For my flesh~ truly is to eat+ and my blood~ truly is to drink.56 Those who eat my flesh~ and drink my blood~ dwell in me and I in them.57 As the living Father has sent me, and I live by~ the Father, so also those who eat~ me, my Word, shall live by~ me.58 This is that bread come down from heaven: Not as your fathers ate manna and are dead, but those who eat~ of this bread will live forever.59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.60 Therefore when His disciples heard this, many of them said: This is a difficult+ saying to understand. Who is able+ to hear and comprehend it?61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained+ about+ this+, He said to them: Does this offend you?62 What then+ if you see the Son of man ascend up to where He was before?63 It is the Spirit who gives life+. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are Spirit and they are life.64 But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him.65 Then He said: Therefore I said to you that no one can come to me unless+ it is given to them by my Father.66 After that, many of His disciples went back and did not walk with Him any more.67 Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away?68 Simon Peter answered Him: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.69 We believe and are sure that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.70 Jesus answered them: Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.71 He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. For it was Judas who would betray Jesus, even being one of the twelve.
