John Chapter 16
1 I have spoken these things to you so that you would not be offended and fall away.
2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time is coming when⁺ whoever kills you will think that they do a service to God.
3 They will do these things to you because they have not known either the Father or me.
4 But I have told you these things so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. I did not say these things to you at the beginning because I was with you.
5 But now I am going away⁺ to Him who sent me, and none of you asks me: Where are you going⁺?
6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient~ for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8 When He comes, He will convince⁺ the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.
9 Of sin, because they do not believe in me.
10 Of righteousness, because I am going to my Father and you will see me no more.
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 I still⁺ have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 However, when the Spirit of Truth has come, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak from⁺ Himself, but whatever He hears from God He will speak, and He will show you things to come.
14 He will glorify~ me, for He will receive of mine and declare⁺ that to you.
15 All things that the Father has are mine. Therefore I said that He will take of mine and declare⁺ that to you.
16 A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me, because I am going to the Father.
17 Then some of Jesus' disciples said among themselves: What is this that He says to us: A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me. And: Because I go to the Father?
18 Therefore, they said: What is this that He says: A little while? We cannot tell what He is saying.
19 Now Jesus knew that they desired⁺ to ask Him about this, and so He said to them: Do you inquire among yourselves about what I said: A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me?
20 Truly⁺, truly, I say to you: That you will weep and mourn⁺, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.
21 When a woman is in labor⁺, she has grief⁺ and pain because her hour has come, but as soon as she has delivered the child, she no longer⁺ remembers the anguish, because⁺ of her joy that a child⁺ is born into the world.
22 Therefore, you now have grief⁺, but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice and no one will take away your joy from you.
23 In that day, you will ask nothing of me. Truly⁺, truly, I say to you: Whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you.
24 Before this⁺, you have asked nothing in my name. Now ask and you shall receive so that your joy may be full.
25 I have spoken these things to you in proverbs, but the time is coming when I will no longer⁺ speak to you in proverbs, but I will show you plainly of the Father.
26 At that day, you shall ask in my name. I do not say to you that I will pray and ask⁺ the Father for you.
27 For the Father Himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came forth⁺ from God.
28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world again and I am going back to the Father.
29 His disciples said to Him: Behold, now you speak plainly and speak no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that you know all things and we do not need anyone to ask you any more. By this we believe that you came forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them: Do you now believe?
32 Behold the hour is coming⁺, yes it has now come, that you will be scattered, everyone⁺ to their own, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me.
33 I have spoken these things to you so that in me you might have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer~. I have overcome the world.
