Luke Chapter 7 1 Now when Jesus had ended all His words+ to the people, He entered Capernaum.2 There a certain centurion's servant who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die.3 When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent the elders of the Jews to Him, beseeching Him that, having come, He would heal his servant.4 When the elders came to Jesus, they begged+ Him diligently+, saying that the centurion for whom He should do this was worthy.5 For they said: He loves our nation and he has built a synagogue for us.6 Then Jesus went with them and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him saying: Lord, do not trouble yourself. For I am not worthy that you should come+ under my roof.7 Nor, for that reason+ did I think myself worthy to come to you. But if you would just speak a word, my servant will be healed.8 For I also am a man set under authority, having soldiers under me. I say to one: Go. And he goes. To another: Come. And he comes. To my servant: Do this. And he does it.9 When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him and He turned around+ and said to the people who followed Him: I say to you: I have not found such+ great faith before, even in Israel.10 Upon returning to the house, those who had been sent found the servant who had been sick now well+.11 And it came to pass on the next+ day that Jesus went to a city called Nain, and many of His disciples went with Him and many people followed.12 Now when He came near to the gate of the city, behold a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. Many people from the city were with her.13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her: Do not weep.14 Then He came and touched the casket+ and those who carried+ it stopped+. He said: Young man, I say to you: Arise.15 The dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave+ him to his mother.16 Fear seized+ everyone+ and they glorified God saying: A great prophet has risen up among us. And, God has visited His people.17 The report+ of this went throughout all Judea and throughout the region all around+.18 The disciples of John told+ him about+ all these things,19 and John called two of his disciples and sent them to Jesus saying: Are you the one who was to come, or should we look for another?20 When the men had come to Jesus, they said: John the Baptist has sent us to you saying: Are you the one who was to come, or should we look for another?21 In that same hour, Jesus cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits. And to many who were blind He gave sight.22 Then Jesus answering said to John's disciples: Go and tell John what things you have seen and heard: That the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the Gospel is proclaimed+ to the poor.23 Blessed are those who will not be offended and disbelieve in me.24 After the messengers from John departed, Jesus began to speak to the people concerning John: What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing+? Behold those who are gorgeously appareled and live luxuriously+ are in kings' courts.26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet.27 This is the one of whom it is written: Behold I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way before you. Matthew 11:1028 For I say to you: Among all those born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist, but those who are least in the kingdom of God are greater than he.29 All the people who heard Jesus, and the worldly+ people, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, not being baptized by him.31 Then the Lord said: To what then shall I compare+ the people+ of this generation? What are they like?32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace, calling to one another, and saying: We have piped to you and you have not danced. We have mourned to you and you have not wept.33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say: He has a demon+.34 Now, the Son of man has come eating and drinking, and you say: Behold a gluttonous man, a wine drinker+, a friend of worldly+ people and sinners.35 But wisdom is justified by all her children.36 Then one of the Pharisees asked+ Jesus to eat with him. So He went to the Pharisee's house and sat down to eat.37 And behold a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat down to eat+ in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping and began to wash His feet with tears and wipe them with the hair of her head and kissed His feet and anointed them with the ointment.39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited+ Him saw this, he spoke within himself saying: If this man was a prophet, He would have known who and what kind+ of woman this is who touches Him, for she is a sinner.40 Jesus answering said to him: Simon, I have something+ to say to you. He said: Master, say on.41 There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed nearly two year's wages+ and the other two month's wages+.42 When they had nothing with which to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore: Which of them will love him most?43 Simon answered and said: I suppose that the one to whom he forgave most. Jesus said to him: You have judged correctly+.44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon: See this woman? I entered your house and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has washed my feet with tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.45 You gave me no kiss, but since the time I came in, this woman has not stopped+ kissing my feet.46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but this woman has anointed my feet with ointment.47 Therefore I say to you: Her sins, which are many, are forgiven. For she loved much. But those to whom little is forgiven, love but little.48 Then Jesus said to her: Your sins are forgiven.49 Those who sat down to eat+ with Him began to say within themselves: Who is this that forgives sins also?50 He said to the woman: Your faith has saved~ you. Go in peace.
