Luke Chapter 8 1 Now+ after this, it came to pass that Jesus went throughout every city and village, proclaiming+ the Word and showing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve disciples went with Him.2 Also, certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene out of whom went seven demons+,3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, Susanna, and many others ministered to Him from their substance.4 When many people had gathered together, having come to Him out of every city, He spoke to them by a parable:5 A sower went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some fell by the wayside and it was trampled+ down and the birds+ of the air devoured it.6 Some fell upon a rock and as soon as it had sprung up, it withered away because it lacked moisture.7 Some fell among thorns and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.8 Other seed fell on good ground and sprang up and bore fruit a hundredfold. And when He had said these things, He cried out: Those who have ears to hear, let them hear.9 Then His disciples asked Him saying: What might this parable be?10 Jesus said: Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God. But to others I speak in parables, that seeing they might not see and hearing they might not understand.11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the Word of God.12 Those by the wayside are those who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the Word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.13 Those on the rock represent those who, when they hear, receive the Word with joy but they have no root and so they believe only for a time+, and in a time of trials+ they fall away.14 The seed that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go forth and are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.15 But that on the good ground are those who, in an honest and good heart, having heard the Word, keep it and bring forth fruit with patience.16 No one, having lit a candle, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a candlestick so that those who enter in may see the light.17 For nothing is secret~, that will not be made manifest. Nor is anything hid, that will not come to light+ and become known+.18 Therefore, take heed how you hear, for whoever has, to them more will be given, and whoever has nothing, from them will be taken even what they seem to have.19 Then His mother and brothers came to Him, but were not able to get close to Him because of the crowd+.20 Someone told Him about this, saying: Your mother and your brothers are standing outside+ desiring to see you.21 He answered and said to them: My mother and my brothers and sisters are these who hear the Word of God and do it.22 Now it came to pass on a certain day that Jesus got into a boat with His disciples, and He said to them: Let us go over to the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.23 But as they sailed, Jesus fell asleep. Then a windstorm+ came down on the lake and they were filled with water and were in jeopardy.24 His disciples came to Him and awoke Him saying: Master, master, we are perishing. Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they stopped+ and there was a calm.25 He said to them: Where is your faith? They were afraid, and wondered, and said to one another: Who is this man? For He commands even the winds and water and they obey Him.26 Then they arrived in the country of the Gadarenes near+ Galilee.27 When He went forth to land, a certain man out of the city met Him. This man had demons+ for a long time and wore no clothes and did not live+ in a house but among the tombs.28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him and with a loud voice said: What do I have to do with you Jesus, Son of God most high? I beseech you, do not torment me.29 For Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man, for often times it had seized+ him. He had been kept bound with chains and shackles+, but he broke the bands and was driven into the wilderness by the demon+.30 Jesus asked him saying: What is your name? He said: Legion. Because many demons+ had entered him.31 The demons begged+ Jesus to not command them to go into the bottomless pit+.32 Now there was a herd of many swine there feeding on the mountain and they begged+ Him that He allow them to enter into the swine, and He allowed+ them to do so.33 Then the demons+ went out of the man and entered the swine and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake and were choked.34 When those who fed them saw what was done, they fled and told it in the city and in the country.35 Then the people went out to see what was done. They came to Jesus and found the man out of whom the demons+ had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.36 Those who had seen it told the others who came later how Jesus healed the man+ who had been demon+ possessed.37 Then the whole multitude from the country around+ the Gadarenes begged+ Jesus to depart from them, for they were taken with great fear. So Jesus got into the boat and returned back again.38 Now the man from+ whom the demons+ were gone+ begged+ Jesus to be taken with Him, but Jesus sent him away saying:39 Return to your own house and declare+ all+ the great things God has done to you. So he went away+ and published throughout the whole city all+ the great things Jesus had done for him.40 And it came to pass that when Jesus returned, the people gladly received Him, for they were all waiting for Him.41 Behold a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell down at Jesus' feet and begged+ Him to come to his house,42 for he had only one daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was+ dying. As Jesus went, the people crowded+ in upon Him,43 and a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years and had spent all her means of livelihood+ on physicians, but could not be healed by any of them44 came behind Him and touched the border of His garment. Immediately her bleeding stopped+.45 Jesus said: Who touched me? When everyone+ denied it, Peter and those who were with Him said: Master, the multitude is overcrowding+ you and pressing you and do you say: Who touched me?46 Jesus said: Somebody touched me, for I perceive that virtue has gone out of me.47 When the woman saw that she was not hidden+, she came trembling. Falling down before Him, she declared to Him, before all the people, the reason+ she had touched Him and how she was immediately healed.48 Jesus said to her: Daughter, be of good comfort~. Your faith has made you whole. Go in peace.49 While He spoke, one came from the house of the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him: Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master.50 But when Jesus heard this, He answered him saying: Do not be afraid. Only believe and she will be made whole.51 When Jesus went+ into the house, He allowed+ no one to go in except+ Peter, James, John, and the father and mother of the girl+.52 Everyone wept and mourned for her, but Jesus said: Do not weep. She is not dead but is sleeping.53 They laughed at Him scornfully, knowing that she was dead.54 Then Jesus sent+ them all out and took her by the hand and called to her saying: Child, arise.55 Her spirit came again and she arose immediately+, and Jesus directed+ them to give her something to eat.56 Her parents were astonished, but He charged them that they should tell no one what was done.
