Luke Chapter 9

Then Jesus called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons+, and to cure diseases.
And He sent them to proclaim+ the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
He said to them: Take nothing for your journey: not staves nor provision bag+ nor bread nor money. And do not have two coats apiece.
Whatever house you enter, stay+ there, and from there+ depart.
Whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
So they departed and went through the towns, proclaiming+ the Gospel and healing everywhere.
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about+ all that was done by Jesus and he was perplexed. Because, it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,
by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets was risen again.
Herod said: I have beheaded John, but who is this of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see Him.
When the apostles returned, they told Jesus all that they had done. Then He took them away+ privately to a deserted+ place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
When the people knew about this, they followed Him and He received them and spoke to them about+ the kingdom of God, and He healed those who had need of healing.
When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him: Send the multitude away so that they may go into the towns and country all around+ to lodge and get food+, for we are in a deserted+ place.
But He said to them: You give them food to eat. They said: We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless+ we go and buy food+ for all these people.
Now there were about five thousand men. Jesus said to His disciples: Make them sit down in groups+ of fifty.
They did so and made them all sit down.
Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them and broke and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
They all ate and were filled, and of the fragments that remained, they took up twelve baskets.
Now it came to pass, as He was alone praying, His disciples came+ to Him and He asked them saying: Who do the people say that I am?
They answering said: John the Baptist. But some say Elijah. Others say that one of the old prophets is risen again.
He said to them: But who do you say that I am? Peter answering said: The Christ of God.
And He strictly+ charged and directed+ them to tell this to no one,
saying: The Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
Then He said to them all: If anyone+ will come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
For whoever would+ save their life will lose it, but whoever would+ lose their life for my sake, will save it.
For what is a person+ benefited+ if they gain the whole world and lose themselves or be destroyed+?
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of them will the Son of man be ashamed when He comes in His own glory and in His Father's and of the holy angels.
But in truth I say to you: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.
Then it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, Jesus took Peter, John, and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
As He prayed, the appearance of His face changed+ and His clothing+ became white and radiant+.
And behold two men talked with Him, + Moses and Elijah,
who appeared in glory and spoke of His exodus+ that would soon be accomplished in Jerusalem.
But Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep. When they were awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him.
Then it came to pass as Moses and Elijah departed from Jesus, Peter said to Him: Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tabernacles. One for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. Peter did not know what he was saying.
As Peter spoke, a cloud came and overshadowed them and they became fearful as they entered the cloud.
Then a voice came out of the cloud saying: This is my beloved Son. Hear Him.
As the voice occurred+, Jesus was found alone. And they kept this matter silent+ and told no one in those days any of those things that they had seen.
It came to pass on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain+, many people met Him.
And behold a man in the multitude+ cried out saying: Master I beseech you: Look upon my son for he is my only child.
And behold, a spirit takes him and he suddenly cries out. It convulses+ him so that he foams at the mouth, bruising him and it will hardly leave+ him.
I begged+ your disciples to cast him out and they could not.
Jesus answering said: O faithless and perverse generation. How long shall I be with you and endure+ you? Bring your son here.
Even+ as the boy was coming, the demon+ threw him down and convulsed+ him. Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the child and gave+ him to his father.
They were all amazed at the mighty power of God. While everyone marveled+ at everything Jesus did, He said to His disciples:
Let these words+ sink down into your ears, for the Son of man will soon be delivered into the hands of men.
But they did not understand this saying. It was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask Him about+ that saying.
Then a discussion+ arose among them as to who might+ be the greatest.
Perceiving the thoughts in their hearts, Jesus took a child and sat the child down by Him
and said to them: Whoever will receive this child in my name receives me. Whoever will receive me receives Him who sent me. For those who are least among you all, the same shall be great.
John answered and said: Master, we saw one casting out demons+ in your name and we forbad him because he does not follow us.
Jesus said to John: Do not forbid him. For whoever is not against us is for us.
Then it came to pass that the time had come when Jesus was to be received up, and He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem.
He sent messengers before His own presence+ and they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for Him.
But they did not receive Him because His face was set to go to Jerusalem.
When His disciples James and John saw this, they said: Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them even as Elijah did?
But Jesus turned and rebuked them and said: You do not understand+ what manner of spirit you are to be.
For the Son of man did not come to destroy people's+ lives, but to save them. Then they went to another village.
Now it came to pass that as they went in the way, a certain man said to Jesus: Lord, I will follow you wherever you go.
Jesus said to him: Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man does not have anywhere to lay His head.
Then He said to another: Follow me. But he said: Lord, allow me to go and bury my father first.
Jesus said to him: Let the dead bury their dead. You go and proclaim+ the kingdom of God.
Another also said: Lord, I will follow you, but first let me bid farewell to those who are at my house.
Jesus said to him: No one, having put their hand to the plow and then looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
