Luke Chapter 14

Now it came to pass, as Jesus went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day, that they watched Him.
And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had a serious illness+.
Jesus answering spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees saying: Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day?
They remained silent+. So Jesus took hold+ of him, healed him, and released+ him.
Then He answered them saying: Who among+ you shall have a donkey+ or an ox fall into a pit and will not immediately+ pull it out on the Sabbath day?
Again, they could not answer Him about these things.
So, Jesus put forth a parable to those who were invited+, remarking+ how they chose out the chief rooms for themselves, and saying to them:
When you are invited+ to a wedding, do not sit down in the highest place+ lest someone+ more honorable than you be invited+ by the host,
and then the host who invited+ you both might come and say to you: Give your place to this man, and you then, with shame, must+ take the lowest place+.
But when you are invited+, go and sit down in the lowest place+ so that when the one who invited you comes, he might say to you: Friend, go up higher. Then you shall be honored+ in the presence of those who sit down to eat+ with you.
For whoever exalts themselves will be humbled+ and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Matthew 23:12
Then He said to the one who invited+ Him: When you make a dinner or a supper, do not call your friends or your brothers or your relatives+ or your rich neighbors lest they also invite+ you back again and repayment+ be made to you.
But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind
and you will be blessed, for they cannot repay+ you. You will be repaid+ at the resurrection of the righteous+.
When one of those who sat down to eat+ with Him heard these things, Jesus said to him: Blessed are those who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
Then Jesus said to him: A certain man made a great supper and invited+ many people.
Then he sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited+: Come. For all things are now ready.
But they all with one consent began to make excuses. The first said to him: I have bought a piece of ground and I need to go and see it. I beg+ you to excuse me.
Another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen and I am going to examine+ them. I ask+ you to excuse me.
Another said: I have married a wife and therefore I cannot come.
So that servant came and reported+ these things to his lord~. Then the master~ of the house, being angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in the poor, the maimed, the crippled+, and the blind.
The servant said: Lord, it has been done as you have commanded, and yet there is room.
The lord~ said to the servant: Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in so that my house may be filled.
For I say to you, that none of those who were invited+ shall taste of my supper.
Great multitudes went with Jesus and He turned and said to them:
If anyone+ comes to me and does not hate~ father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters and yes, even their own life also, they cannot be my disciple. Matthew 10:37
Whoever does not bear their cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
For who among+ you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, to see whether you have sufficient to finish it?
Lest perhaps+ after having laid the foundation and not being able to finish it, all who see+ this begin to mock
saying: This person+ began to build and was not able to finish.
Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and take counsel to know whether he might be able, with ten thousand, to meet one who comes against him with twenty thousand?
Otherwise+, while the enemy is yet a great way off, he might send an ambassador to ask for peace.
So likewise, whoever does not forsake all that they have cannot be my disciple.
Salt is good. But if salt has lost its savor, with what shall it be seasoned?
Otherwise it is not fit for the land or for the dunghill, but just to be cast out. Those who have ears to hear, let them hear.
