Matthew Chapter 27 1 When the morning had come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death.2 When they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.3 Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, when he saw that He was condemned, repented and took+ the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders4 saying: I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood. They said: What is that to us? You live+ with that.5 And he threw+ down the pieces of silver in the temple and went out and hung himself. Zechariah 11:136 The chief priests took the silver pieces and said: It is not lawful to put them into the treasury because it is the price of blood.7 So they took counsel and with them bought the potter's field in which to bury strangers.8 Therefore that field was called: The field of blood. And it is to this day.9 This fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah who said: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price and value set+ by the sons+ of Israel, Jeremiah 32:7 Zechariah 11:1210 and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed+ me. Zechariah 11:1311 When Jesus stood before the governor, the governor asked Him saying: Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him: You say.12 When He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.13 Then Pilate said to Him: Do you not hear how many things they witness against you?14 Jesus answered not a word; so that the governor marveled greatly. Isaiah 53:715 Now at the feast, it was the custom+ for the governor to release a prisoner to the people, whomever+ they wanted+.16 And they had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas.17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them: Whom do you want+ me to release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?18 For he knew that it was for envy they had delivered Him.19 Now when he was seated+ on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him saying: Have nothing to do with that righteous+ man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him.20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.21 The governor answered and said to them: Which+ of the two do you want+ me to release to you? They said: Barabbas.22 Pilate said to them: What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ? They all said to him: Let Him be crucified.23 The governor said: Why? What evil has He done? But they cried out all the more saying: Let Him be crucified.24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude saying: I am innocent of the blood of this righteous+ person. See to it.25 Then all the people answered and said: His blood be on us and on our children.26 Then he released Barabbas to them and when he had flogged+ Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall and gathered to Him the whole company+ of soldiers.28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.29 And when they had made+ a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and a reed in His right hand. Then they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him saying: Hail, King of the Jews.30 They spit on Him and took the reed and struck+ Him on the head. Isaiah 50:631 After they had mocked Him, they took the robe off of Him and put His own clothing+ on Him and led Him away to crucify Him. Psalm 22:732 As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene by the name of Simon and they compelled him to bear Jesus' cross.33 When they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say a place of a skull34 they gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with gall. When He had tasted it, He would not drink. Psalm 69:2135 Then they crucified Him and divided+ His garments by casting lots, thus fulfilling what was spoken by the prophet: They divided+ my garments among them and upon my coat+ they cast lots. Psalm 22:1836 And, sitting down, they watched Him there37 and set up over His head the written accusation: This is Jesus The King of the Jews.38 There were two thieves crucified with Him: One on the right side+ and another on the left. Isaiah 53:1239 Those who passed by reviled Him, shaking+ their heads Psalm 109:2540 and saying: You who would destroy the temple and rebuild+ it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.41 Likewise also the chief priests mocked Him with the scribes and elders, saying: Psalm 22:742 He saved others. He cannot save Himself. If He is the King of Israel, let Him come down from the cross now and we will believe Him.43 He trusted in God, let God deliver Him now, if He will have Him, for He said: I Am the Son of God. Psalm 22:844 The thieves also, who were crucified with Him, reviled+ Him. Psalm 109:2545 Now from twelve o'clock+ noon, there was darkness over all the land until+ three+ in the afternoon.46 About three+ in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani. That is to say: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Psalm 22:147 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said: This man calls for Elijah.48 Immediately+ one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave it to Him to drink.49 The rest said: Let Him be. Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.50 When Jesus had cried out again with a loud voice, He yielded up the spirit+.51 And behold the veil of the temple was torn+ in two from the top to the bottom, the Earth quaked+, and the rocks broke+.52 Graves were opened and many bodies of saints who slept arose53 and came out of the graves after His resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many.54 Now when the centurion and those who were with him watching Jesus saw the earthquake and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying: Truly this was the Son of God.55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to Him were there watching+ from a distance+.56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.57 When the evening+ had come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple. Isaiah 53:958 He went to Pilate and asked+ for Jesus' body. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth60 and laid it in his own new tomb that he had cut+ out in the rock. Then he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb+ and departed. Isaiah 53:961 And there were Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting over by+ the tomb+.62 Now the next day that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate63 saying: Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while He was yet alive: After three days I will rise again.64 Therefore command that the tomb+ be made sure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away and say to the people that He is risen from the dead. So, the last error will be worse than the first.65 Pilate said to them: You have guards+. Go and make it as sure as you can.66 So they went and made the tomb+ sure, sealing the stone and setting guards+.
