Revelation Chapter 9 1 The fifth angel sounded and I saw a star fall from Heaven to the Earth, and the key to the bottomless pit was given to him.2 He opened the bottomless pit and smoke like that from a great furnace rose up out of the pit, and the Sun and air were darkened by the smoke from the pit.3 Out of the smoke, locusts covered the Earth and were given power like the power of scorpions upon the Earth.4 They were commanded to not hurt the Earth or any green thing or any tree, but only those people+ who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.5 The locusts were given instructions that they should not kill the people+, but that they should be tormented for five months. The torment was to be like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes.6 In those days, people+ will seek death, but will not find it. They will desire to die, but death will flee from them.7 The shapes of the locusts were like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were gold crowns and their faces were like the faces of men.8 They had hair like women's hair and teeth like a lion's.9 They had breastplates like iron and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running to battle.10 They had tails like scorpions with stingers in their tails to hurt people+ for five months.11 They had a king over them, the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek is Apollyon.12 After all this, one woe is past and behold, there are two more woes to come.13 The sixth angel sounded and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar that is before God.14 God said to the sixth angel with a trumpet: Let loose the four angels who are bound in the great river Euphrates.15 So the four angels were released+. They had been prepared for this hour and day and month and year to slay one third of all mankind+.16 The number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million+ and I heard their number.17 Then in the vision I saw the horses and those who sat on them. They had breastplates of fire, hyacinth+, and brimstone. The heads of the horses were like the heads of lions, and fire, smoke, and brimstone came+ out of their mouths.18 By these three plagues, a third of all mankind were killed: by the fire, the smoke, and the brimstone that came out of their mouths.19 For their power+ was in their mouth and in their tails. For their tails were like serpents with heads that caused great pain+.20 The rest of mankind+ that was not killed by these plagues still+ did not repent of worshiping the works of their hands. They did not stop worshiping demons+ and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood that can neither see nor hear nor walk.21 Nor did they repent of their murders, sorceries, fornications, or thefts.
